Rosco’s Day/Night Backdrop Technology
Our state-of-the-art digital printing process enables us to print a daytime image on one side of the drop with the matching nighttime image precisely registered on the other side. This allows for one, stationary drop to render a daytime image when lit solely from the front, a nighttime image when lit solely from the back, and dusk/dawn effects when a mix of front and rear lighting is employed. Because the image printed on the night side of the drop is an actual photograph, a rear lit Rosco SoftDrop will produce an ultra-realistic nighttime backdrop by revealing all of the realistic colors and color temperatures present in a nighttime image.
Easy to Ship & Rig
Cotton SoftDrops can be folded into standard shipping boxes. This eliminates the extraordinary shipping and handling issues of the extra-long and extra-heavy tubes that traditional backdrops typically ship in. SoftDrops also require less effort, time, and cost for rigging crews to hang a SoftDrop on set during pre-production. They weigh significantly less than traditional vinyl drops, and their wrinkle-resistant properties make SoftDrops ready to use right out of the box.

Easy to Light
Thanks to the ultra-matte surface of SoftDrop, Cinematographers no longer need to worry about the hot spots and lamp reflections they experience using traditional vinyl or polyester drops. Plus, due to its semi-translucent properties, SoftDrop requires fewer lamps to backlight for night effects. This results in significantly reduced fixture and cable costs, set up time and power consumption.
Environmentally Responsible
Because they are printed utilizing water-based inks on natural cotton, SoftDrops are an eco-friendly backdrop solution. Unlike traditional vinyl drops, SoftDrops need no time for solvent off-gassing and can be ready to shoot the day they are hung. Once a Custom SoftDrop has completed its role on set, it will, oftentimes, be available to be re-used as a Rosco Rental Backdrop. Should the SoftDrop end up in the dumpster, it will break down in 1-5 months in a landfill compared to the 1,000-2,000 years it takes for vinyl drops to degrade.
